Independent make-up advice

I wear very little make-up but am getting married next year. I know I could pay for somebody to come and sort me out on the day but I would rather be able to do my own. But I know I need some advise beforehand regarding what to use, how to apply it etc. I know the big stores make up counters do makeovers but firstly I hate the thought of being a public guinea pig, and also I know they'll be trying to sell me their stuff. What's the best/cheapest way to be able to get decent advice and tips from somebody who doesn't have an agenda to sell me their products?

Many beauty salons offer this service, but it's not free and it's difficult to judge how good they are beforehand.

I'd go with Avon, you can try an return items you don't like withn 90 days, so ynou can really experiment and find what suits you.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

I think you can learn to do a great deal yourself, reading up online and in mags and watching good youtube tutorials then having a practice yourself.

Rather than go to a beauty counter for a full make up, why not concentrate on one thing at a time. It's quite acceptable to go to a few different make up counters, explain you're looking for a new foundation for example and pick their brains. Public guinea pig? Well a few minutes in the chair having them apply foundation for you and showing you the ideal shade and application techniques isn't too painful and likely they'll give you some samples to take away. of course they want to sell stuff, but it's quite acceptable at the start to say you're looking round and would like to try for yourself at home before you decide. Mac and Clarins, I find really helpful, especially if you can go at a quiet time.

Also, have you any friends who are good with make-up, who can advise, teach you techniques? You've got plenty of time to practice so you start to learn what you like and what you don't.

Make up artists at salons will normally have a portfolio so you can see what sort of thing they can do and if it will work for you, just ask in the salon. Failing that at many cosmetics counters the assistants also have their own freelance Make-up Artist job going on and again will have (or should have!) a portfolio for you to look through.

a great source of inspiration I have found is QVC when they have the makeup slots... you of course don't have to buy the products, and I'd probably advise not as you will want to find colours that REALLY suit you, but they show lots of ways to apply makeup which you may fnd usefull.

Do you know anyone who does there makeup in a way you like that you might be able to ask for help?

I'm forever doing a line of people's eyemakeup on a night out - but I live in MK, so am a bit far from you to offer my services.

Good luck with it - happy to answer any questions you may have if I can.

Found this link for another person asking about makeup - this lady is famous for her turorials - she had a slot on this morning
