Just been doing the washing up with her locked in the kitchen with me and flicked water over her head when she started aiming for the foot, which she did not appreciate, but stopped her for a bit.
Just wondering if a well aimed squirt from a water bottle would do the trick for any length of time? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Poor thing and poor you I remember when our dag had her hip replacement that was a nightmare. You could get a spay bottle and fill that with water and give her a spray every time she goes for her dressing." I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you"

I can't remember if I have mentioned this to you before but interrupting the behaviour is likely to extinguish the behaviour over time so the water or something like a pet corrector spray [STRIKE]would[/STRIKE] should work. My rott hates the pet corrector spray and it stops him in his tracks or hand clapping seems to stop him too. I suppose it works the opposite way to clicker training.
Good luckIf you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
I think the medicinal honey is a GREAT idea....I have seen it used to great effect in helping speed up healing of diabetic leg ulcers.0

could you try masking the smell with some of your perfume? not on the wound of course but a layer or two up? then a few drops on the top of the bandage? poor thing.............she is obviously a great believer in licking it better and is going mad cos she cant get at it!
I have just read the above post and it reminded me of something - dogs hate the smell of TCP (dont ask why it reminded me - I dunno). I know you arent supposed to use it to bathe dogs wounds - but my dogs used to growl if they smelt it on anyone. perhaps a drop of that instead of perfume?
btw, I have used lavender oil and honey on wounds and both are effective at stopping infections - much to my vets disgust!0 -
With quite an amount of success we used this on our girls tail yesterday. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Powerflex-No-Chew-10cm-Horse-Pet-Bandages-Pack-2-/190453768830?pt=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item2c57ede27e
After removing her dressing EVERYTME we leave the house we got some of this in desperation, it works just like the vet wrap, so top layer of dressing but it tastes so bitter (I had to test it!!) that the theory is they won't touch. Worked so far, one dressing has stayed on for over 24hours! Breakthrough? Good luck Elsien.2 angels in heaven :A0 -

Both of mine back off at the smell of tea tree so that might work also.
Hows the pooch doing Elsien? Has the lack of sleep driven you round theh bend yet? I hope everything is ok with your pup xxIf you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
Poor you - after weeks of medication my dog finally seems to have got rid of the demadectic mites from her paws but she too was licking constantly and driving us mad. The elizabethan collar worked reasonably well although she did find out that by contorting herself she could reach her back paws - I think they probably work best with abdominal wounds such as after spaying. Must be even worse if you have a dog with really long legs!
What irritates me is those people who say it's ok for them to lick as it speeds up the healing process. Sorry, but that's *£$%**!! More often than not, as you have found, and I did too, the dog licking causes infection which can be more of a problem than the original wound! Hope things turn a corner soon and you can get some rest.

We've increased the evening diazepam, and she still had me up half the night. The only advantage was that when I put her back in her box she stayed there, and every time she boinged up like a jack in a box, I could take her legs out from under her and settle her again without getting into a wrestling match!
I did look at the elizabethan collars, and I'm sure they're more comfy, but I don't think they'd stop her getting her foot in her gob - she's quite a contortionist for a solidly built lump.
lisawood78, I really like the look of that bandage, thank you - will ask the vet tomorrow what they think. I don't think it'll stop her chewing it if it's really bothering her (the bitter apple spray she didn't even notice), but it should stop the sly slurps when she thinks no-one looking. We're meant to be trying to keep the bandage dry, and yesterday mum thought she was safely asleep in her box, when she'd actually got her nose under the blanket and was silently licking her foot without showing any movement at all. By the time we realised, it was soaked through. Crafty little so-and-so.
I have a reprieve tonight as I'm at work so mother is doing the honours. Wish her luck. I have to be honest, the main thought going through my head at 4 am (other than death threats) was that now she's 13 she'd better keep going for long enough to have made all this worth while! I do want my money's worth from her, considering the amount I'm forking out.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
