40th birthday help!

MY DH is turning 40 this year and I really need some help to do something special or unusual for him.
problem 1 is that his birthday is on new years eve, and problem 2 is that I will be 8 months pregnant!
he has already decided to have a "boys weekend" away later in the year to celebrate his 40th which I think is a great idea.
he doesnt want a big party on the day itself and I will not be up for entertaining loads of people anyway. as it is NYE, going out just the two of us is not really a practical option as hard to get a babysitter. family live a long way away and we will have seen them over xmas, and so are just planning to have a couple of friends round in the evening for a low key night in.
I would like to do something special for him to mark the day, perhaps something that we could do in the daytime with the DCs. we are within reach of London. I have also got no idea what to buy him as he is the type to buy anything he wants for himself.
help!

oohh tricky one. i found it hard enough last month buying for hubby's 30th. in the end i got him a gorgeous watch , which i planned to get engraved but wanted to make sure it fitted ok first.
how about going out for a meal to the first reserant you visited when you were first together. could you book a hotel for the night. or maybe just cook a really special meal, somthing you don't normally cook, but is one of his fav's. but both of you get dressed up. a nice black number for you and a smart suit for hubby. so it like a resturant at home ?0 -
you could go out the night before as places wont be very busy! then on the day do a nice home made meal. i know it wont be on the day but how about a zoo experience. that way he can book it for after the baby is born. or a driving experience, or whatever!

It was my OH's 40th in September and I bought him an Audi R8 driving experience, and a personalised number plate for his car. It's mine in January, and I've got no idea what I'd like!!!!!!!!!:j0

My hubbys 40th I bought him a sky dive as it was something he'd talked about doing before he dies! I suppose any experience type gift is a lovely way to mark a big number, has he got a list of stuff hes always wanted to do? For his 30th (a safer option) I did a surprise party at home for his close family and friends.Morgage till Nov 30 GOAL MFW Sept 2016Aug 11 - £100k Aug 2016.... It's GONE!!!!!

2 Years ago myhusband turned 50. Every night for fifty nights before his birthday i left a gift for him beside the bed. Tiny things, a bag of his favorite sweets, 50 pennies, cimema tickets, clothes which I bought on sale, 50 twopences and so on. I had to keep them all fairly cheap because 50 gifts can soon add up. On the 50th night, tickets for a holiday. He was so thrilled everynight going to bed to see what was in the giftbag and his friends were so envious. I don't know who enjoyed it more me or him0
