54p in credit AND THEN CHARGES!! totalling £154.40!!! A&L / Santander

I asked for my A&L Premier account to be closed as I was made redundant from my last place of work and no salary was going to be paid in monthly.. they agreed to closure.

Underwent two major surgeries and forgot all about bank account.

18months later I am 54pence in credit but have been hit with a bill for £154.40 for OVERDRAFT FACILITIES! they said they sent me a letter detailing terms and conditions. Never received! and this is the first time they have tried to contact me for payment, even though NO MONEY HAS BEEN PAID INTO THAT ACCOUNT FOR 18MONTHS!

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! BE AWARE OF THIS LEGAL CON BY ALLIANCE&LEICESTER SANTANDER and dont make my mistake of NOT checking if an account is closed and forgetting about it!

How did you close the account and did you receive anything in writing confirming the account was closed?

A+L are pants at closing accounts. Hopefully you have got a letter from them saying they have (or will) close the account?
  • They "agreed" to the closure of my wife's account three times, promising to send the closure receipt. The fact is, that once an "underfunding fee" starts getting you O/D and triggers a future "Unauthorsed O/D fee in the future", it starts a never ending chain of future charges.

My wife's closure failed each time because the computer will not allow closure when some future charge is forthcoming. So the 'dim' ones just tell you to wait until then, and they wipe out the charge, but of course by that time another one is in train.

We eventually got it closed, with £105.05 transferred to another account. The account had been fully cleared out to zero balance, but the 5 pence was "interest" on all the false debits the staff had to keep putting in while 'learning' how to close an A&L account. The £100 was compensation, and the £5 was part of the money they kept pumping in, but forgot to take out.

So good luck on this one! But first you have to convince them that you did indeed 'close' the account when you say - because clearly it wasn't closed. In our case, the girl at the branch could remember it because we had closed other accounts at the same time.
