Nintendo makes loss

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11642428
Nintendo has reported a half-year loss after being hit by falling sales and the high value of the yen, which lowers its overseas earnings.

The Japanese computer games firm posted a net loss of 2bn yen ($24.7m; £15.6m) for the six months to 30 September.

This compares with a net profit of 69.5bn yen for the same period in 2009.

Nintendo's sales for the first half of its financial year were down 34% to 363.16bn yen, partly due to lower demand for its Wii console.

The company did not release a net profit figure for its second quarter to 30 September, however its operating profit more than halved to 30.9bn yen.

Nintendo is forecasting that its annual profit will drop to the lowest level in six years, as sales of the Wii console decline for the second year in succession.

And what does this mean for you?

I have no idea but the BBC think its bad news. Perhaps everyone was waiting for the new XBox?

There isn't a new Xbox, although there is Kinnect which is a new controller in a few weeks.

Nintendo haven't had a big release for a while, although they have a 3D handheld console coming out next year that ought to do rather well.

I was going to say that and would also head up a fair amount of the loss.
R&D is expensive and hardware R&D and manufacturer is about as expensive as you get in that industry.
Should turn the loss round next year on the release of the new console.
  • Yes the 3DS will almost certainly be a success. Reviews love it, its 3D without the glasses.

Also with the ¥500 Trillion QE bunny money the Japanese central bank will be adding to the supply Nintendo will do well with the debasement of the currency.

I call it bunny money because thats how it spreads, they create 500 trillion units of fiat currency and it spreads to something like 500 Quadrillion with fractional reserve banking and outstanding revolving credit.

In the same way that Sony ruled the world with the Walkman.

ARM doesn't make chips. It designs them and licences them.

They are used in Nintendo products as well as Apple as well as almost every mobile phone.

Considering Nintendo have been making out like bandits for years selling what is essentially a Gamecube with added waggle and a library of games almost entirely consisting of shallow, utterly awful titles with names like "Hannah Montana's My Little Pony Waggle Olympics 7", I should think they should make a loss.

    Indeed.

I had a Wii for a month or two, but soon discovered that it suffered from the same problem previous Nintendo consoles, lack of decent software. Great if you like Mario, but apart from that, very few games that I`d like to play. Having said that, Wii Sports Golf is brilliant. Me and a couple of friends have played countless rounds. We find it more fun, and more challenging than any of the Tiger Woods games. If only Nintendo would develop a stand alone golf game, based on the same design but with more courses and a few extra options (wider range of clubs, prize money, upgrades etc), then I reckon they`d sell a fair few copies, and maybe a few more consoles.
30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much. Savings : That's asking for ridicule.
