Money access during charity work

Hi,

My partner is off to do some charity work in South Africa for 3 months. We are discussing the best way to take and manage money whilst over there. Obviously cash withdrawals can be expensive, taking cash is a no goer and she doesn't really want to use a credit card. We are thinking about travellers cheques as a main option supported by a debit card.

She currently uses HSBC as her main account, but is this the best bank to be with whilst abroad?

All very complex, so appreciate peoples experiences to help us.

Thanks,

Nick :)

Have you read through the Cheap Travel money guide?

The link to the full list of UK Credit/Debit Card charges from the 'Cards from Hell' item shows that using the HSBC Debit Card incurs a 2.75% exchange rate loading plus a cash withdrawal fee of 2% (minimum £1.75, maximum £5).
