DVD not playing on PC - but other disks are...

I have been trying to play a DVD (film) through my PC but when it reaches the Dell DVD software it fails to start and instead makes loud whirring noises (revs and and up over and over again).

However, it still seems to play normal CD's OK (video and music).

Any clues as to what is happening? Do I need a new DVD drive or is it something else?

Thanks!

Give the DVD a light wash in soapy water and dry carefully .Could be that the laser cannot pickup due to dirt or grease .

    COuld be a driver/software issue.

I had this problem with an old computer, later discovered the DVD driver had some how become corrupt and stopped working.

You need to look in your current settings/software list in 'Control Panel' and see if there is anything relating to the DVD driver.
You should, if need be, be able to download the driver/software online for free if needed

The DVD player software on my Dell did not work after Dell helped me with a problem with Windows. It turned out that the DVD software should have been installed prior to reloading windows. The solution was to instal VLC media Player .... give it a try.

    Still not forgiven DELL !
