Truffles-the shroomy ones and "caviar"

I am fancying something truffle flavoured over Xmas. Obviously theyre not MS but its a special occasion. I just wondered whether anyone has tried truffle based products ie oil, flavoured rice etc, and whether its any good. Ive also seen tiny jars with black truffles in them that are expensive but not extortionate.Im thinking that these are inferior sorts but I cannot afford the really posh ones-has anyone tried these?

Also wondering whether the "caviar" (ie lumpfish roe) that you see in Tescos, Lidl etc at Xmas, is nice to eat? Can anyone recommend one?

  • Truffle oil is fab. I was given a bottle in a Christmas Hamper two years ago and was very impressed with it. Having said that, I've never felt the need to buy it, since it ran out! I used it mostly for dressing risotto or pasta dishes.

I agree - truffkle oil is the thing - lovely in special truffle mash, or on risottos etc. A little goes a long way so it's less hideously expensive than you'd think - but don't save it 'for best' as I once did (and it went off) gobble it all up quickly. Little jars and tins of black truffles have been a disappointment - they taste of nothing.
I hate lumps of fish roe so can't help there I'm afraid...

I love lumpfish caviar, the stuff you can buy from the supermarket. Scrummy on buttered toast for breakfast! Not sure if I've ever had the "real" caviar, though, so can't say how it compares.

lumpfish tastes different from caviar, BUT I am happy to eat either!
