Just listening to an interesting commentary on Chile on Sky News. In a nutshell it stated:
Many think of Chile as the country that saw the overthrow of the Allende government by the brutal Pinochet regime, whereas in fact it has had a democratically elected government since 1990. This is a major PR coup (sorry, possibly the wrong turn of phrase) for Chile.
Chilean people are proud of their nationality, as witnessed by the proud cheers of Chi-Chi-Chi-Le-Le-Le and the branding of the national flag which was all over the event. 40% of Chilean exports come out of the ground and 1/3 of the world's copper is provided by the country. Mining and miners have pride of place in the national psyche. The industry has helped build a strong economy.
Chile has also diversified into wine very successfully as well as having a strong telecoms industry. Its coastline in places is like Norway's and it is developing its tourism industry.
When the earthquake hit, its modern infrastructure under such a strong earthquake held up and showed that it should now be considered among more developed nations as opposed to those that are still developing.
The comments are broadly those that I've typed from Sky, but I've been to Chile and thought it a wonderful country. If the people of Chile get an economic boost from this then good luck to them. In a global economic downturn its nice to hear some heartwarming stories even if they are from the other end of the world. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? isn't the work 'coincidence' rather than 'irony'?
unless you are alanis morissette and then everything is 'ironic' apparently.

I hope she got my present. A blow up General Pinochet.0 -
Is there a tradition of inviting former PMs to Number 10 when a new PM is appointed. Thatcher was invited back by both Blair and Brown as well as Cameron. I can't wait for Blair to be invited back by Cameron then.
