Cancelling and closing cards?

Hi fellow MSEr's,

For serious stoozers and rate tarts I am just wondering how long do you keep your card open after it's 0% promo period ends?

Do you close your card immediately once the balance on your statement showed zero? or would you wait for a month or two in case repeat offers are a possibility?

Cheers

I close mine fairly promptly, but I always see if they will put me through to retentions to get a repeat offer. Some others hold on to them for longer and call every now and then to see if there are repeat offers. I wouldn't hold on to them in the vague hope you get a phone call, personally.

Clariman thanks. That is what I always do, close the cards promptly after the promo period ends as I don't have any luck yet with repeat offers. Last May I did try to haggle Amazon (halifax) if they could offer any extension and also in July Barclaycard but both were unsuccessful. My HSBC card ends in November but as what I've read from other posts they are also no good ingiving repeat offers but I'll give it a go.

    Cheers
  • I've managed to get offers from Virgin, and Egg do one for five months on your anniversary.

If you close your HSBC and keep it closed for six months, they'll consider you a new customer when you reapply.

In the past, I've had trouble applying for new cards when I've had a high available credit. I reduced some limits and closed other cards, waited for these to show in my credit reports, and had no trouble after that.
