Tipping - AI Turkey

We will shortly be off on a AI holiday to Turkey, and wondered what other people do about tipping.
Who do you tip, how much and in which currency (TL/GBP/Euro’s etc.) ?
i.e. do you tip by function such as bag carriers, cleaners, bar staff, entertainers, or do you leave a ‘collective’ tip at the end based on the overall service you have received?
Thanks

A good question , on my first visit last year , I even went back to the reception to ask ( the guy there was very approachable ) I did not know. Getting a few drinks , late at night and not paying for them was..... strange!
The Stock answer was , you walked into the hotel , and all was included.
But you soon saw the numerous clearly labelled TIP boxes.
Don't tip in Sterling, you may well be asked to convert English coins to Euros/ T.L by any waiters ( when they get to know you)

I normally dropped a few Euros to the Bar staff , if!! I had good service in the evening.
Never during the day , as I carried no money.

    .

Would agree - I usually tip waiters if there's good service and leave a small tip each day (or every few days) for the cleaner as leaving it on the last day there's no guarantee it's the same person who's done all the work.

And definitely don't tip in Sterling - notes would be too much and coins are hard for staff to change - I usually tip in Lira. No need to tip dolmus drivers (local buses for tootling around the area) but there's usually a tip basket for the bus driver/tour guide if you do any trips.

The hotels we've been to have had a tips box on the counters for the bar and waiting staff.

We've usually left a few lira for the maid every few days as they work hard for little money. We also left the half used toiletries as the maids take those home and use them.
Here I go again on my own....

Same here - always leave behind any unfinished toiletries - they get paid so little. A friend of mine carries home half used shampoo bottles - can't see the point given the weight in the case and how cheap they are for us to replace compared to a hotel maid's cost of living. The same friend's husband once commented on how they were trying to "con" him out of a tip by making nice shapes on the bed with towels and rose petals. He just didn't get it when I tried to explain that in many cases they don't even get a living wage ...
  • Another way to tip is to get a supply of $1 bills before going and then using them to tip. One dollar is about 65p.
