Is late charge by BT of £25.12 justified or legal ?

BT is charging £ 25.12 in two headings i.e. Late payment charge of £ 7.50 and Reconnection charge of £ 17.62 is it justified and legal ?

Here is the snippet of my bill
One-off charges
Late payment charge £ 7.50
To avoid paying this charge in future, see the back of the first
page for how to set up a Direct Debit
Other one-off chargesW4 Jun 10 £ 17.62
Charge for reconnection of line after we had disconnected it
Total one-off charges = £ 25.12
Also they charge this fee for nothing.

I received a bill which had a wrong charge and when I called customer services they say they have reduced it and I deposited the bill by reduced amount which it should have been and next month I see this unjustified late charge and this is happening every quarter now.

Can they charge this reconnection fees ?

So when you phoned they admitted it was a mistake and the refunded you £25.12?
I think the problem is this credit will go on your NEXT bill not your current one.

If you can afford it I would suggest that pay the full amount shown on your current bill.
Then you will get a £25.12 credit on your next bill.
    That should solve it.

If the bill was incorrect, then you notify them, put the incorrect amount into dispute, and pay the remainder - the bit you're obliged to pay. Then they issue a correct bill.

However they're not interested in having it work that way. What they want to do is to have authority to take the wrong amount from your bank account by direct debit, and for you to have to chase them to get the difference back.

You sensibly refuse to permit them to do that and if the bill was indeed incorrect then the late payment fee doesn't apply, and in turn nor does the reconnection fee.

The correct course of action is to deduct those from the bill and remit the lower amount.

That will then probably result in another set of late payment fees and another reconnection charge.

You might question whether you want to deal with this company or not.
