9-11 year olds - help !!

Ive been approached by a local school with regards to my job as an Usborne books rep, they are interested in doing a sponsored read but the lady had concerns about books appealing to the older children,

Id like some opinions on what they are into at this age, my 2 are only 5 and 7 as are all my friends kids so ive had no contact with children of this age before.

What sort of interests do they have ? I'd like to be able to appeal to them and be appropriate for their age level but ive no idea where thats at :o

Thanks !

Roald Dahl is great for reading to an audience of that age group...

My 11yo DD is loving Eoin Collfer at the moment ( think that's how he spells his name:p)

Erin Turner too - the trilogies about cats are wonderful but might not be to everyone's taste.

Horrible Histories, Harry Potter, Diary of a Wimpy kid - all of these series are well-liked by my DD's class of 9 and 10 year olds.

Darren Shan, Eoin Colfer, Garth Nix, Suzanne Collins, Eragon series (those these are long).

Edit: I forgot Roald Dahl, not overly sure about Enid Blyton as, shall I dare say it, she's more 'girly'!! Honestly I don't know that many 9-11 yr oold boys who would rather read Enid Blyton than Darren Shan. All the above authors I mentioned are the ones I know of that would appeal to both genders.

Edit 2: Sorry I forgot Terry Pratchett also does a few kids books.

Phillip Pulman's Dark Materials is at a similar reading level to the Harry Potter books, and much better stories, so would be good for those who like HP.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Seabold is possibly a more challenging read for those who are beyond the younger books mentioned.
  • Oh I forgot about Pullman. And Inkheart.

Or some classic like The Hobbit and Treasure Island and Narnia.
