New house - no existing contract

Hi, I'm moving into a property and I need to organise both telephone and broadband access. I don't have an existing landline to transfer, so do I still need to get a telephone line activated by BT or can I bypass them? I also want to organise broadband access.
Any suggestions?

No need to use BT. If you do, the line rental will be a 12 month contract.
It's a good idea to start with who you want the broadband with, as that might dictate which suppliers are open to you. Also think about calling packages - what's the priority - cheap calls at set times, inclusive packages, or like me, you don't actually use the phone much and the broadband is the only important thing.
For instance if you wanted to go with BE (arguably one of the best) then you can have BE install the line, but you also need to take BE broadband.
If it's cabled, then for broadband you can't beat Virgin cable, but if it isn't, then Virgin National (ADSL) does not have a shining reputation.
Cable also has a much cheaper installation fee than landlines do, but also can have higher call charges.0 -
Thanks. I'm looking at a few deals via the mobile operators. However most of them require you to set up a line with BT first which adds to the cost.
Stupid question but: is cable faster and / or more reliable than via the telephone line?0
