Personal Barclayloan debt - chasing spouse

Can you tell me what happens given the following circumstances:
A personal Barclayloan was taken out in 2005 over 7 years, but the loanee lost their job in 2008 and is still not currently working (he hasn't worked for last 2 years). Initially PPI paid out for 12 months but their cover period has now ceased and Barclays are chasing for the money. This person has since been told that the household income is taken into account for debt arrears (ie including his wifes salary etc).
Can you explain if this correct when a personal loan suddenly becomes his wife's responsibility to pay?
Many thanks as we are very confused......also Barclays are making daily phonecalls chasing the debt - they have said this is due to automatic dialling within a call centre but at what stage does this become harrassment as the circumstances do not change from day to day??

They can chase you for it, however see it from their view if say he earns £40 a month and she earns £2000 a month so it has to be looked into0

Send Barclays a letter requesting that the phonecall harassment cease (there are template letters on this site for this) - that should reduce the multi-phonecall scenario.0

they can't make you pay anything without going to court and obtaining a CCJ; the judge will then decide on payments
if he owns property they could apply for a charging order on the property0 -
the loan is in his name alone?
it is therefore not wife's to repay.
BUT if there are joint accounts - current account, mortgage - I would. Otherwise a) wifes credit rating gets trashed b) if a big debt, could be trouble over the house.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
They are not chasing his wife for the debt.
But they are basing what they will / won't accept as a reasonable payment based on household income.
While Mrs Wifeofdebtor is not liable for the payments, I don't think the bank's actions are unreasonable. If total household income shows affordability, perhaps this couple should get their act together and meet their various commitments, whether in joint or single names.0 -

No and no.
Is it a joint contract? If no then the bank has no right.
They have no ground or power to do so.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Good laugh for all that is worth.
The wife (enemy lol) doesn't have to and is not her problem.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
