remembrance cards for those who can't make it to a funeral

Hello

I need to organise some cards for a funeral. They may be called memory cards (guess how far that gets me on Google), memorial cards, or remembrance cards. About credit card sized or a little taller, either folded or just one piece. They usually have a picture, some details about the person, and a prayer or saying on the other side, with religious symbols or pictures. I think it might be an Irish/Catholic thing primarily but can't even seem to track down a shop/online place that supplies them (in the UK at least).

I hope this is an ok question to put here. The moneysaving aspect isn't the most important here - although clearly that would still help - but I would appreciate any suggestions people have on
- what they're called
- where to get them from
- costs
- whether they normally go with all the mourners, or just to those who can't make it

And any other advice/thoughts.

Many thanks in advance.

  • I think they're called prayer cards (probably known as other things too) and a relative (Irish Catholic) sourced them from Ireland. In that case they were given out shortly after the funeral. I don't know any UK suppliers, or indeed the Irish supplier. The funeral home or Church could probably help. But a google search with prayer cards should pick up some leads.

    All the best, Leanne

ok, we got some when my dad died, known as memorial cards. Really nice to keep and lots of non irish catholic friends remarked on them.

Generally we gave them out at the funeral and posted them on to family and friends who couldn't attend. If you can go into any church ask the priest who will know the companies who make them. Otherwise, have a look in the local church papers-for instance in the back of catholic churches, are papers called "the universe" which have catholic news in, and adverts for these companies. (often based in ireland)-we got ours through there. Also as mentioned above search google etc for memorial cards. All the companies can send you brouchures showing designs, layout and price, so you can work it out before you order.

price depends on what you order-there are some set designs, ie:set words/poems on them, or you can change the layout at extra cost (minimal cost)-we did this and had a sunset on the front, dads picture on the left inside, a verse on the right side, and on the back the verse "do not stand at my grave and cry, i am not there i did not die......" put on it.

They price them depending also on how many you order.

Truthfully, i think they are a beautiful keepsake-you can use a photo of your loved one that everyone can look at and remember them. (i will find mine when home and find what company we used for you).

I would imagine the funeral director you deal with would be able to tell you where you can get them made too.

This is a learning curve for me (a minister), up until now I woldn't have known who makes them - so thanks for that!

Yes, I know these cards as rememberance cards as we had some done for my Uncle. We got a contact from Veritas Ltd in Cork Ireland tel 021 4251 255 or corkshop@veritas.ie. As far as I am aware it is a predominantly Irish/Italian tradition and many catholic priests will be able to help for local printing. Veritas has a branch in Leamington Spa as far as I can remember. Forgot to say, we sent them to all the family and close friends.

Have checked and ours were the lalor ones-website linked on homersimpons post above. They do a nice range, and not necessarily too "full on religious", as i mentioned we had a sunset on the front and verses we chose, or you can get religious icons etc on it if you choose. Ordering was easy and everything was delivered fast and good quality reproduction of the photo. 8 years on and the card is still in good nick.

Best wishes to you and all those affected by the loss.

Thank you to all those who have helped above and for your kind thoughts ClareW. The links are very useful as I will be able to send them to my family for us to decide together on an appropriate design and verses. I asked the church but neither the priest nor the lady helping him knew of a supplier, however the funeral director did put me in touch with a local couple who ran a printing company and had produced them before, so they are out there once you know what you're looking for.

I think we will certainly be doing these as people seem to appreciate them and there were many people who could not make it to the funeral, so I'll get on with some organising and post back up here on what happens in case it is useful for someone else in the same situation, or for people like Inkie to suggest to families they deal with. It's difficult for all the family and friends who would like to attend to make it, so this is a nice way of involving others, and could I think be very well adapted at home by those on a budget - something I've not ruled out myself as the person concerned hated waste.

On a similiar note as my family and I were going through some photos in clearing things up we came up with the idea of collecting a sample in to an album which was available for mourners at the "reception" to look through afterwards. People seemed to really appreciate this and it gave a nice and appropriate, but happier focus to the gathering, with relatives being able to add stories and names to unknown faces, and the last photo in the book seemed to catch many people's eye so we have effectively chosen together a nice photo for remembrance.

I hope this helps and thank you for all your advice.

Sorry to hear of your loss *hugs*

Just wanted to say that I have never heard of these cards before, but it's a beautiful idea. I would have liked something like that to remember my Grandparents with.
Here I go again on my own....
