No problems at all for me with my Nationwide Visa Debit Card and I travel there regularly.
  • Agreed. No problems on a number of trips to Rome. I very rarely bother with buying euros before I leave for trips in Euroland thesedays. Admittedly in some countries/cities there are little inconveniences e.g. last few times in Berlin, a VISA was no good for ticket machines in the Metro, but my old almost expired HSBC Maestro was fine (HSBC reissued that as a VISA this year so probably I'll have to keep a few Euros spare for Berlin now :p)

But for Rome, hitting the tarmac at Ciampino, if my wallet was empty of anything but plastic (but two cards always better than one :D), I wouldn't really anticipate any problem.
