You have had all day to ring them and ask - why have you not?

I have already stated that I've rang the bank, but I've been asked to apply in writing, which I know (from previous experience when I first went onto benefits) takes weeks. If offered a job I will need to tell my employer asap whether I can afford to accept it or not.

I think it would be rather reckless to accept a job offer and then find out that the bank will only accept the full mortgage payments, which, if I can't afford, will then fall into arrears and eventually lose my house.

mortgage interest payments are only paid for a limited time (2 years) so at some point your going to have to start making the payments on your own or think about alternatives

Rules that apply to SMI since 5 January 2009

From 5 January 2009 if you were getting income-based Jobseekers Allowance, Income Support or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, most claims for SMI came under new rules including:
    • waiting 13 weeks from the date you claim before you get SMI (this is known as a waiting period and was previously 39 or 26 weeks)
    • being able to claim for mortgage interest on up to £200,000 of your mortgage (this was previously £100,000)
    • getting paid SMI for up to two years only if you are getting income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

Sorry but I don't understand ... if you are going to turn down a job (which you have just done a course for) on the basis you may not be able to pay your mortgage, how would you make the payments in future?

Next month SMI payments are changing and soon help for people receiving smi payments on jobseekers will change - I'm not sure exactly for how long the payments will be for but it will only be for about 3 months if I remember correctly.

You forgot to quote the following:

There is no limit to how long you can get SMI if you are getting:
    • Income Support
    • income-related Employment and Support Allowance
    • Pension Credit

New rules are being applied to SMI payments with the new coalition government which were announced in their budget, the first being implimented next month (payments are being almost halved!) and other details will be given end of October regarding more cuts.

Are you on IB or ESA as it is now called?

But you're not claiming any of those - you're claiming income related JSA.

"I have recently been offered a job as a Teaching Assistant.
As I am receiving jobseekers allowance "

I am really not trying to be unhelpful but you are likely to be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks if you turn down a job offer.

How much will the repayment on your mortgage be than the 90.00 extra a week you would get if you took this job?

How can I accept a position that I know will not be enough to cover my mortgage?

But you will not be able to meet the payments on jobseekers allowance very soon as they will cease!
The Order also introduces, for the first time, a cut-off point for benefit: after 104 weeks SMI payments will cease for those on Jobseeker's Allowance
    this is quoted from:

then why did you train for that position knowing you would never be able to accept a job doing it?
