Holiday deposit on credit card

We booked a holiday for next october and had to pay a £1500 deposit (on our credit card). My husband has now been made redundant and we cannot afford to go. The holiday company won`t give us our deposit back. Are we able to claim it through our credit card company?

In a word, no. the credit card company is not liable in this instance.
Did you not take out travel insurance when you booked your holiday, make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Insurance usually covers redundancy assuming you took it out at the time of booking. Your credit card company isn't liable.0

No, no travel insurance, we usually take it out a few weeks before we travel. That'll teach us. Wasn't expecting my husband's redundancy, we wouldn't have booked if we'd have known.
Really could do with the money now, obviously. If we ever book another holiday it will be travel insurance sorted straight away!

Without exception travel insurance should be taken out as soon as the travel is booked. You are then covered for cancellation for an insured reason.
There is absolutely no benefit in waiting until "a few weeks before travel". Insurance is to cover unforeseen events such as illness, accident or redundancy. It is for the unexpected.0 -
Have you looked at the small print on your invoice, sometimes thee is a percentage return.
Other than that, can you save up like mad, sell what you can and go and have a good time anyway.
Youre a long time dead.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

In general the lowest amount you have to pay is the deposit, but hey worth checking just in case.
I would not cancel if it's more than a year away.
You should get insurance ASAP.
It won't cover for redundancy, but if one of your travelling party became ill and couldn't go then it would cover you.
There is also the possibiity of selling it on, slthough if it's NEXT october then I'd wait and see.0 -
Why was the deposit so much? I've only ever paid 10% with the remaining 60 days before departure...Was your holiday £15k??
Surely there is a chance that you will be able to go still - I mean surely your husband will be looking for work and there is a reasonable chance he'll get a new job before next October.
I appreciate that you were just wondering about getting the deposit back but that's not going to happen. Hopefully it'll all work out for you!0 -
Not sure why the deposit was so high it was £250 per person so four adults and two children. We do wonder if we could afford to go anything could happen between now and then, just feeling doomed at the moment!
No small print on our holiday booking paperwork about deposits anyway. I did ring the admin department and they said sorry we can't return your deposit not even some of it.
I think the only way we'll get it back is if they go bust!0 -
Well...I've been in touch with the credit card company and they're going to seewhat they can do and get back to us within five working days.
Worth a shot.....got nothing to lose.0 -
