Day out in Birmingham

OK, following some great tips for my day in Southampton last year, I'm after helpful hints once more. We're off to another university open day on Wednesday, and I plan to drop Sir at the Edgbaston campus where I believe I can leave the car parked for free. So in the space of 4 hours, where should I go for good shopping and a decent inexpensive lunch? And are there any 'must sees' around Birmingham? Or is it just The Bullring or bust?

To be honest, by the time we'd got lost trying to find the campus and then got lost and held up all the traffic at one of the barriers on campus I was glad to abandon my car and not move it until it was time to go home. So I caught the train and went round the Bullring for a couple of hours: of course most of the shops are chains I can get to perfectly easily from home, but it's nice to have the chance to do it on my own! Plus I found Selfridges - a surreal experience, I thought!Signature removed for peace of mind0
