Hi all...had Virgin Media since end Feb this year...wondered if it was worth shopping around (not sure of penalty from Virgin if we leave before 1 year) OR going back to Virgin for a better deal?

Currently have XL television...large broadband....2 x extra normal (not v+) boxes...phone line with the basic (i.e free local calls at weekends only)-coming in at around £60 total a month. Also have one x V+ box downstairs that we really want to keep!

We hardly use the phone (just twice a week on 'overide' providers for my G/F to call Europe & the vey accaisional odd national call)..and looking at the channel lists the 'large' selection would probably be ok.

As far as broadband goes we download the odd film but no online gaming, etc ...just surfing & e-mail.

We find the whole 'virgin pricing' & discount structure very confusing & wondered if we could get a better deal-or if we'd need to wait. By the way our area can't receive freeview....any help would be great!

Nearly forgot....some 'discounts' were applied cos we had v+...working in sales I know that 'discounts' can be ...shall we say...a 'creative' selling point?

Since you are only 6m into your contract, you're going to have to pay 6m @ £60 (assuming a 12m contract) to leave early. So any saving you might make by moving will be wiped by the £360 early termination fee.
If you want subscription TV then Sky is (unfortunately) your only choice.
Have you looked at the Freesat option instead?

  • Yes..freesat looks good & I have a freeview PVR recorder (not sure it would work with a satelite dish??) from my old place where freeview was easily picked up. But as you say if I have to pay 6 x £60 (didn't realise was as much as this-thought it was a 1 off charge??!) its worth waiting for 6 months...even if I got a 2nd hand dish would not have a clue how to install it...may have to wait 6 months! Thanks for replying..

A Freeview PVR can only receive Freeview, so it's not going to work with Freesat. You'll need a Freesat digibox or PVR.
The ETC is a one off charge, but it's equal to the value of the rest of the contract, which is what you signed up to.
