Complicated Debt Problem, Desperatly Need help !

Hey Everyone,

Im new here, So i hope im posting this in the right place,

I have a pretty bad debt problem, Which all started off when i became unemployed a few months ago, Im currently reciveing job seekers allowence and am activily seeking work, However i've gotten my self into such a financial mess.

I get £93.71 every 2 weeks (hardly enough to live on), i feel degraded enough being on jobseekers allowence, And i hope that i can find a job asap, I currently owe the following,

£279.71 to Vodafone on a phone bill for one month ( i went 240ish minutes over my allowed 1200 ), However ive set up a payment plan to clear this over 3 months (3 payments of £93 a month until the balance is cleared)

£97.50 Arrears with Greenwood personal Credit, i owe about £180 in total

£74.87 to Natwest in charges, Now this is one of the ones im confused about, Because i dont have an overdraft facility on my account, However through no fault of my own im in minus funds with them ? And the only reason is due to them putting charges on my account, Heres what my online banking breakdown says, I do not have any overdraft facility on this account, So surely this is not right ?

30 Jul 2010 Charges- £12.95 30 Jul 2010 Charges- £20.00 30 Jul 2010 Charges- £10.00 31 Aug 2010 Charges- £12.95 31 Aug 2010 Charges- £20.00

Im also paying a second contract with orange (£22.50 per month) aswell.

Im really starting to panic over all of this, As i simply cannot afford it all every month on job seekers allowence, Im trying my hardest to get into a job, Im loosing sleep at night because im worrying, I dont have any money for food, Or anything like that, Im completely screwed at the moment.

I've looked into taking out a £1000 loan (purely to consolidate these debts) into a monthly payment of £55 to one lender, Giving me breathing space and a affordable monthly payment, However being unemployed finding a lender is nearly impossable.

I have 2 current accounts, Im having my money paid into my lloyds tsb account, not my natwest one.

Im booking an appointment at the local CAB for help, I know its not alot of debt, but i cant simply afford it, And im just making my problem worse by not paying.

What should i do ? What can i do ? I have a good credit record with good payment history, No defaults or anything, I used to pay everything either ontime or early, But now its going down the drain.

Thanks !

  • First thing to do is to write to all the people you owe money to, tell them the situation and ask them to stop charging you interest. Chances are they may be willing to for a few months. Next talk to one of the debt charities, CCCS are so nice and explained everything really well to me and made me feel a lot better.

Read this article, it is a sticky at the top of the board and tells you who to speak to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2077631. Their websites have lots of useful info on them as well (especially National Debtline)

You have to prioritise rent, utilities and food above other debts. They will help you.
