  • On what grounds are you wanting a refund?

Did you book a flexible ticket or a non-refundable one?

Sorry I should have made it more clear. The airline has gone into adminstration and stopped all flights.
The flight i booked is for my sister who is currently back packing in Guatemala. she has travel insurance but I think it would be more complicated claiming through that as she's not due back til december.
    thanks

If the airline is in administration, you won't be able to claim a refund through either them or the ticket agent you booked with (Expedia won't refund you as they won't be able to claim the fee back from the airline).

No idea if ABTA / ATOL can help you here. Travel insurance might be your first calling point here.

There is no financial protection for scheduled flights, and this government has made it clear it won't introduce any! You can buy scheduled airline failure insurance at the time of buying a flight but a quick look at Expedia's website I cannot find any sign of it. Most large companies always offer it as a matter of course but there doesn't seem to be anything there. ABTA can't help and nor can ATOL as Mexicana wasn't part of either organisation so check to see if the travel insurance had scheduled airline failure insurance as part of the policy. If not, and Expedia seem to have been as helpful as ever, try making a claim against the credit card used. Sometimes they will use discretion and refund, but Expedia will be re charged, and since they have been so unhelpful, perhaps it serves them right!

Mexicana is now claiming that it will refund tickets issued but for tickets issued by agents outside the US, the claim must be made via the agent, in your case Expedia. I suggest you look at the airline's website and then demand you agent act before it is too late!
