Welcome finance settlement figure

Hope you can help me with this problem. Its for my brother actually, anyway He had a loan with welcome finance and was paying £50 per month direct from his bank account after the last £50 payment went out of his account in March an agent of Welcome Fiance rang and said that if my brother paid £19 the debt would be paid in full.
We went down to the luton office and paid the £19 and received a recipt which we still have which says settled.
yesterday my brother received a phone call from welcome finance saying that there was still a balance of £54.00 outstanding. My brother queried this as it was now over 5 months since we had originally settled the account with the Supervisor/manager of the luton branch and the person on the phone stated that the agent dealing with my brothers account had made several mistakes but as a show of good will he could have the £54 reduced to £36. My brother said it was not his fault that an agent was making mistakes and that he was not going to pay anymore on a debt that was in his mind cleared for over 5 months and that if there had been arrears or late payments then it would have been noticed on the account and how is he to know that Welcome are pulling a fast one and using this "sca" on other account holders who have settled their accounts. Welcome finance have now said that if he doesnt make this payment then they will appraoch a credit agency to get the "remaining amount".
Please can anyone advide on this matter .
many thanks for taking the time to read this post

Write back (not phone, not e-mail, not text - proper letter). Attach a photocopy of the settled statement. Say you do not acknowledge this debt. Leave it at that.
  • Wrtie back, be firm say you will not pay and not just that you dont think you should, and say you have got legal advice on the matter... it will scare them away

Hope this gets sorted for you

write back witha copy of the recipt saying settled, then tell them if the dont write it off due to their error that to send a letter headed finla response and you will let the fos decide for them.

you cannot write to a company saying you will not pay and claiming to have taken legal advice without then being able to outline the reasons for not paying. they wont be 'scared away' by the OP being 'firm' but they will respond to clear facts
