Instant rejection from RBS - is it harmful?

Hi, I've just tried to apply for an RBS credit card on behalf of my mum, but after filling-in all the info, received an instant rejection, with a screen telling me to "press next to exit" (how rude!). Her income is more than enough, and all the other details I gave were *about* right (number of credit cards, time with bank, time with current employer, etc).

So is there a black mark against her name now? Would it be okay to apply for another credit card? Or perhaps even the same one, this time using more accurate info?

What do you mean you didn't use accurate info?
Definitely do not apply for the same one with different info - are you normal? Do you want to be flagged up for fraud?

Or is it just the amount of debt you are not sure about? They would know the correct amount roughly from her report anyway.

One rejection is not major issue, it's not black mark as such... they do not even know that she was rejected. But too many applications in short space of time can look desperate and so the rule of a thumb is 2-3 applications in 6 months..

Possibility is that she already has too much debt in comparison to her income etc... I would request her credit report and take it from there - you will know what cards she has, how much roughly already she owes and whether she had no late payments etc..

i got rejected online about 2 months ago for an RBS cc.

i was bored on sunday night so filled in the form again with instant approval.

very strange when congratulations appeared on my screen.

  • Well, I didn't use inaccurate info. I just used ballpark figures. She doesn't know *exactly* how long she's been with her bank, so I just approximated.

With regards to the re-application, I wasn't sure whether the credit reference agencies had even been contacted, see, or whether they just rejected her outright because something didn't correspond with something they had on their own system. The rejection screen said that a credit score "may not have been used in your case", so I wasn't sure.

I'll get a copy of her credit report, to see if it contains anything we need to know. But I suppose now I should wait until the RBS application shows up (or not). How long would that typically take? Does it matter which credit reference agency I use?

Also, I'm not sure I like the idea of applying for credits because you're bored, afc80. Each to their own, though.;)

Sorry, nothing helpful to add here, but this looks like an interesting thread and applying for credit through sheer boredom is an unusual way to pass the time (I hope). :p

Yeah most folks usually are a month or two off with that or addresses, they list it per the time they moved in or got the account/activated it but it registers/notifies with the CRA usually a month or two after.
