Bank forgets to verify payment!

Hi All
Have recently paid off a loan with a bank that I have not got any other accounts with. It was paid off by telephone on my debit card. I received an authorisation code and receipt number from the loan bank in question.
Two days later the money I paid to the loan bank was back in my current account but the transaction had disappeared. It doesn't show the money going out or coming back (the loan bank doesn't know this!). Initially the loan bank tried bullying tactics of letters threatening marks against my credit status, adding 'administration' and interest charges and insisting that I set up another direct debit. Then phonecalls stating I MUST pay but I explained at this point that I had paid the amount and have an authorisation code and receipt number. At this point the loan bank's attitude completely changed, they apologised profusely for their behaviours and assured me that my credit status would not be affected and is now politely asking if I could please call my own bank as soon as possible to see if the money has been returned so that I can pay it again. They have admitted the situation is their fault and that there was a botch up at their end in that the payment was never verified.
Yes I have authorisation code and receipt number and an account not showing a return (although this is a technicality I know!) Their drastic change in attitude has led me to question whether or not I have a legal obligation to now 'help' the bank - or is this a situation I can take advantage of ... can/should the bank be held accountable for their error? I just got the feeling that the bank was trying to blag its way out of a situation.
Does anyone know how this works? Do I have a leg to stand on?
Thanks, SLC :A

You should be left in the position had the mistake not have happened. i.e., you will still need to make the payment, but they must remove any charges and additional interest. They should look to reimburse you for telephone costs etc, but you need to rrequest that.Best Regards
