Can I get a refund for goods on one credit card and re buy same thing on another card

Hi I have just bought DS1 a bike for his birthday... a huge expense but a number of us have clubed together. I registered my Nationwide cc with Quidco (for cashback) and went off this afternoon with DS1 to pay for the bike. We were waiting for over 1.5 hours for the bike to be ready anyway, long story short, I forgot the pin number for the card and had to use my Tesco Mastercard for the purchase. I have phoned Tesco Mastercard on arriving home and they do not offer the the additional purchase cover that Nationwide do. I am mortified!!! NO insurance for loss damage or theft and the home insurance department is closed!

I am wondering if they would do a refund on my Tesco mastercard and a re purchase on the Nationwide credit card....what do you think?
(DH thinks I just need to chill........)

TIA

Dx

  • Unless there is something wrong with the bike the shop (Halfords by any chance?) will not refund you so unless you can afford two bikes put it down to experience.

Make sure the bike is covered by your home insurance.

I did exactly the same thing with Currys when i bought a cooker.

They didnt have a problem refunding and then putting it on another card.

Just ask, they can say yes or no.
If you dont ask you dont get, worth a phone call surely

But check your household contents insurance first, it may well be covered and you wont need to bother.

They get charged by the credit company twice if they do that. So unless you can return the goods for whatever reason, they are not likely to want to do it.

Unless the person behind the till is a moron!

Thank you McKneff. Did you go back to the same shop or did you phone up head office?
The house hold contents insurance needs an extra payment to insure the bike away from home... don't know how much as the office is closed at the moment. I will phone the insurance company in the morning to see how much the extra premium is as it might not be worth the fuss. I am just so,so cross with myself for being such a twit!

Thanks jonesMUFCforever it is Halfords. I certainly can't fault their service they were simply excellent. DS1 was determined NOT to leave until the bike had been built and, in the mean time, we had a big disagreement about cycle helmets!
I put my mistake down to stress!

    Thanks for your help

I've done this before. I bought an electrical item with my usual card then realised I should have bought it with the Nationwide credit card for the extra year's warranty. Went back to the shop and asked if I could get a refund on the original card which they did no problem.

Did you take the goods back with you or just the receipt?
    Thanks

I went back to the same shop, Currys, very helpful staff, (and to the other poster, its very rude to call anyone a Moron, Halfords will make enough money to cover an extra cc charge, and good customer service is worth a lot more than that.)

OP, there will be a small extra charge re pedal cycles. This is different from items away from the home. Just check with the ins. company that you are getting what you ask for.

Good luck Op, let us have an update if you can. bit of good publicity for Halfords (as Ive done with Currys)
    wont do any harm.

No I didn't take the goods back, it was a fridge! I just took the receipt back and explained why I wanted to use a different card.

I went back to Halfords this morning and explained everything to the manager. I also told him how delighted I was with the service yesterday and he quite happily did the refund and re purchase for me. So I now have the purchase protection from Nationwide. As you can imagin I am delighted.

    Thanks for your encouragement
