Malaga Airport to Granada carhire advice

My daughter is going to Uni in Granada in September and we are going over next Thursday for 4 days to try and get a flat sorted out. Anyway, the flight doesnt land until about 9pm and the last bus to Granada has gone. A transfer is over £100 so thought I would hire a car at the airport and drive to Granada. We have a hotel booked in Granada and we can park it there. I would not use the car until traveling back to the airport the following Monday so the only mileage is about 150km.
I have hired before on holiday in Spain for a few days in the resort but never like this.
I have quotes from 121 hire around £55, are these right? Also one called DOYOU Spain which gets a horrendous write up, so wont use them.
Just did car4hire.com and it says cartrawler, another name I've seen getting a bad report.
Can anyone advise me knowing what I am looking for?

Thanks!

We used these people when we went to Spain in March. They pick you up from the airport and take you to their office which is right next to the airport to get your car (although looking on their website it looks different for later night arrivals). The girls we dealt with were English so no language problems and we got upgraded on the car. We looked round at all the different car hires and were struggling to find what looked like a reliable bunch as, like you, we read so many horror stories. The people we rented our apartment off recommended First Car Group and we are glad we did and had a trouble free rental. Might be worth giving them a ring and see if they have any offers/special deals?

Thanks Debsy! It is a bit of a nightmare as you say. So many bad reviews. I will give them a call tomorrow and come back and let you know.

Hired my car using malagacar.com who have their own fleet. Very positive experience.

No advance payment when booking. They meet you at the airport and take you on a shuttle to their office (no waiting in long queues at the airport) which is at the first roundabout from the airport (2-3 mins). Unlike other companies they only charge for half tank of fuel instead of full tank and return empty. This company should not be confused with Malaga Car Hire, which is a broker.

I also found them very responsive to my email queries.
  • We used Sixt a couple of weeks ago. Surprisingly no more expensive than the cheaper companies, no queues hardly and fantastic service

hmm £159 tho for 4 days next Thursday... So i guess not on this occasion

It comes up with £64 for the cheapest car. Did they put an authorisation on your card, some of the threads I read say about £400 is put on a card) and, Sorry to ask so much, did you do your own excess insurance thing?

    Thanks for everyones help!

Hi, no they didn't. I did take out the additional insurance to cover excess for 3 euros per day (but I asked for that rather than them offering it to me). You also get a 2-hour grace period for returning your car late.

The recommendation for malagacar.com was excellent. They are efficient and professional. No hidden charges, what they quote online is what you pay, only extra is the half tank of petrol - in my case this was 25 Euros. Got a Seat Ibiza 5 dr which was very new. They dont authorise anything on your card either. I would also now highly recommend them!
My only problems were the driving in the dark over the mountains to Granada and following the Google maps we printed which were useless. E.g. drive northwest on .....Rd ?? No compass!! Also couldnt see the names on the main roads. At least we got there and back ok! :rotfl:Drove 500km in total and I put 20 Euros of petrol into it.

Glad it all went well. I took my sat nav with full European maps so made life easier getting around.
