Battery Warning Windows 7

Hi
A couple of days ago I got a warning on the battery status symbol on my laptop that my battery may need replacing and at the same time it no longers holds a long charge, the battery can go from fully charged to turning off in 15 minutes, if not plugged in.
I thought it odd, but maybe the battery does need replacing as the laptop is about three years old.
However, looking on the net, it seems it is a known issue with Windows 7 and some people are even claiming Windows 7 has damaged the batteries, I cannot see that myself.
Now I don't know if I should replace the battery or not, as some people have got a new battery but still have the same problem.
Has anyboy else come across this?
My laptop is an Acer Travelmate 2490, and apart from this problem, runs well and if I need a new battery so be it, but thought I would ask here if anybody knows more.
Thanks
Martin

Its 3 years old, it'll need replacing. Easiest way to see if its Windows is to fully charge it. Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS. Leave it still in the BIOS until the battery goes flat and see how long it takes.0

Also, possibly relevant, a fairly robust thread.
