Debit card refund query.

Hi

Not a Credit card question but I hope someone might be able to help.

If I paid someone a payment from my Debit card and that payment got refunded to me can they then take that refunded payment back without my authorisation ?

Thanks
Jason

Well, if you request a Visa chargeback, the bank usually believes you, and refunds the money. If, however, the merchant proves you agreed to the terms and they provided the product/service, the bank will give them their money...

Is this what happened? What part do you think is wrong?

Basically I bought the same thing twice from the same merchant. I cancelled the first one. The merchant then credited me back both amounts by mistake. Can they then take the second amount which shouldn't have been credited back without informing me 1st ? I just want to know if I need to allow this balance in my account or not.
    Thanks

I presume, when the firm took a payment twice (to your disadvantage) you informed them and asked for the additional payment to be refunded. Had they not refunded, you would have made a fuss (and rightly so). It would be honest, to advise them of another mistake. But then, as this mistake is in your favour, you obviously do not feel the need.

There is a word for that: ‘double standards’.

The company has no reason to inform you. You did receive goods and they have not been paid (yet). They can charge it against your account for at least six months on the original authorisation. Thereafter they might have to take you to court. You owe the money for the next six years.

As I said in my earlier post I have informed them of their mistake, this all happened about a month ago and they still haven't taken their money back. I just want to know if I will get any notice now before they take the money back, i certainly don't expect not to pay the money it just makes budgeting more difficult.

I do feel slightly offended that it is being implied that I am trying to get away without paying the money back.

How many times should I have to contact them, bearing in mind it takes about 20 minutes to get through on their telephone system and is not a freephone number so it's all at my cost ? once a week ? once a day ?
