Don't bin old bits.

Having sold my old eMac a few months ago I was having a clearout and found the OS 10.4 upgrade kit I bought a few years ago. Was going to put it into a charity box but decided to put it on eBay instead. It has been used once and just sold for £56 plus P&P. I only paid £38 for it brand new!
Why did it go for so much? Wish I had bought a few more!

    That's great!
Now think of that charity you never donated too... ;)

  • Wow, I just found one of those (noooo idea where it came from) and was wondering whether to bother selling it. I just sold two iBooks for ~£50 and didn't think the CDs would be worth that much! Excellent. Ebay is becoming my best friend now I'm out on my own with no money to spare!

As for charity we are currently organizing a Church Fete here in France so will buy a few tombola prizes. Not many people here have Macs.

Not bad, maybe you should donate the extra money you made on top of it to charity now you've got more than what you paid for it. ;)
Good luck with the Church Fete by the way.

You just reminded me that I have an unused battery bought for sons laptop about 5 years back and then he changed laptop anyway. Wonder if thats worth anything.

Come to that, also have the old lap top but it must be about 9 years old now.

operating systems tend to hold value as everyone needs one and there is ongoing demand for even dated ones (up to a point), you'd struggle to find a legit copy of XP for under £50 these days despite being 2 major revisions old

Mac hardware and software tends to hold its value much better than Windows based stuff.
A bit like buying a VW-you pay more initially but it depreciates less over 4 or 5 years.

We had to buy a copy of OSX Tiger recently, as the mobile internet dongle software wasn't compatible with Leopard. As Apple stop selling the 'old' versions of OSX once a new one is out, there is a shortage of copies available for people who need to back-grade - hence the price premium

hethmar - if that battery hasn't been used in 5 years it'll be dead, and you should just dump it responsibly.

I can't believe you downgraded your OS just to make a dongle work? Leopard is about 3 years old now and even Snow Leopard about a year-which telecoms co. is that far out of date?
