Redundancy repayment if find new job

Hi,
We've just been told that our jobs are at risk of redundancy; in the information we've received from HR they are saying that any redundancy payment we get would have to be repaid if we find new employment within 4 weeks of finishing.
This means we'd effectively have to be out of work for at least a month. I haven't heard of this before and it doesn't seem very fair - does anyone know if they're allowed to do this?

Depends. The previous poster is correct - this is common in public sector organisations. But you don't tell us anything about it so we can't really advise.0 -
The regulations will be similar to these.

It does seem harsh. But if you get made redundant from one employer and get a new job with a different employer covered by the same rules then you benefit from keeping your continuity and length of service. It can be a tough call if faced with a tempting lump sum.0
