age of empires gold edition

I am trying to re install age of empires gold edition on my vista pc. It follows the installation program and then sits at 100% with completing.
Any help greatly appreciated, its driving me up the wall.

you running the install as administrator? -right click?

another option, can you register the CD key with Steam and then download and instali from there -they're usually quite good at having solved compatibility issues...

finally can you try running the installer in compatibility mode?

EDIT: Quick google comes up with this

Explore the disc, and on AOESETUP.exe, set the compatibility to Windows 95. It should install fully. Now, if only I could get my computer to stop with the BSOD when I exit the game..

Had a look at steam but they dont do the game.
running the installer in compatibility mode- I have no idea how to do this.
you running the install as administrator? -right click?-I think I've tried this already.

All my other versions ( 2 and 3) of a of e are working, I still cant get this to work.
