Renters Insurance - Fully furnished

Hello
I have a friend who is just about to move into a fully furnished rented house and is not sure what insurance he needs. I would assume that that the owners would have building and contents (to cover their stuff). Would my friends own stuff be covered by the owners insurance. He was told that he would need to take out insurance in case he damages any of their possessions (which I assume is complete rubbish).
Can any of you advise what insurance he will need.
Thanks
Hed
