Suitcases for family travelling long haul

Hi

I`m looking for some luggage for my family to take to NZ- we are a family of 4 travelling and was thinking of taking 2 large suitcases.

BUt which are best- the traditional or trolly type?

Also how big?

If things go ok on this trip we are hoping to fly out to Nz every other year- we have family out there.

I want something that is up to the job but I don`t want to break the bank.

Have seen some at argos a 3 piece- 2 trolly case set Antler Revelation expandale at £49.99- sorry can`t do a link.

but not sure if it is big enough.

Any ideas where I can get good luggage cheap?

Thanks

Ps we are going in Nov so can`t wait for sales.

week 2 £62.64, TOTAL £92.54

  • I would say all the sales are on now of luggage, Woolies, Matalan, Tesco, Asda, Poundstretcher etc.

Has to be trolley if you are talking about BIG. :)
  • Taking 2 tourer sized cases isnt always the best option. for a few reasons

They are huge, very few cars will fit 2 of the !!!!!!s in the boot.
maximum weight per item at the airport is usually 32KG remember that each person normally gets 20KG so you are restricting your self by 16KG I dont know if you plan to buy anything over there.
If you do go over the 32KG limit you dont have many options of where you can put your other stuff ohh the other bag is also up to 32KG. the check in people will allow you to distribute the weight over all your cases if there is space and less weight in some of them.
when full they could be heavy it isnt fair to ask 2 people to lugg the cases about

Good points only 2 people would be manouvering a huge case round the check in area
2 people will have nothing to carry.

My advice avoid the huge 23" and 28" cases they fit so much in going over weight is easy.
dont pay alot for the cases they just get trashed buy the bag chuckers. if you have expensive luggage people think the owners can afford to loose them.
I prefer the more fabric type of case as they will expand slghtly so if your using smaller cases you can cram stuff in.
and always buy trolley cases, wher the handel comes out of the top when they are standing vertical they are miles easier to pull arorund.
I also use the cases that could be carry on bags before the terrorist thing as it could go in the hold if I needed it to.

The most important advice I can give you is - don't buy a black suitcase. Everyone and his dog has a black suitcase and you'll never spot it on the carousel.
I've got a huge case that came as part of a set and with just that one we hit the weight allowance for 2 people of 40 kgs. You run the risk of it either not being allowed on or getting lost because it takes a diferrent route to the rest of your luggage.
I like the material expanding ones. On our outward journey we don't expand teh bags and then when we come bag we have to expand them to fit all the extra junk in.
    Definitely something with wheels.

  • Poundstretcher have some good big expandable trolley cases. I think the biggest size is about £17, and they come in bright colours so you'll be able to spot your luggage on the airport carousel.
If you're also buying hand luggage, remember that the new size restrictions will probably still be in place
The cabin bag should be no bigger than 45cm wide x 35cm long x 16cm deep/high (17.7" wide × 13.7" long × 6.2" deep/high), including wheels, handles, side pockets - equivalent to a small laptop bag or rucksack.
  • We found the very best luggage holders were the huge sports-type bags with wheels (you really do need wheels, they're too heavy to carry).
They held everything we could possibly need and because they're soft-sided, you can really pack stuff in. Also, probably because they are almost barrell-shaped, they didn't sustain any damage in transit.
Also, we found they were cheaper than normal suitcases.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
