Hi,
wondered if you could help me out. I've offered to make some jewellery for the xmas fair at the hospice that treated my mum when she was diagnosed with cancer.
I'm not really arty crafty but wanted to do my bit and looking around i dont think that something like these look too difficult to make
i'd use different charms to suit all ages/sexes etc but my problem is, i have no idea what the bits and pieces are called
I've done a search and found that the cords are called thongs but no idea what the spiraly bits are. Also would i need certain size ends to fasten them
tbh i've not really got a clue, but can't let people down now i've offered my help i would be so grateful if anyone could help me out with what i'd need (the proper names for things) and where best to get it from. I'd feel a bit stoopid popping into my local craft shop and asking for those spirally things :o
TIA

Hello rushnowt
Have you looked at the Jewel Toolcraft website for information? I would've called the items shown here 'fasteners'...........but they're actually called findings.
Hopefully a jewellery maker will read this thread and post some helpful information.;)

http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/CLASSES/result.asp
this is a page on the hobbycraft website which lists all of the classes they do. you may find that your local store runs some useful jewelley making workshops.

if you're anywhere near surrey, they have another one of these craft shows which has lots of stalls to buy things and the one in manchester had lots of classes to do as well.:happyhear0 -
thanks for the links, i think i could do with doing some classes :rotfl:
i've tried my local colleges but they dont have anything available, and i haven't really given myself much time to learn in time for xmas
i'm getting worried that i might have to buy some and pass it off has my own work at this rate :oNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

http://www.beadworks.co.uk/Catalog/Catalog.aspx?sid=46
i'm in manchester but don't know of any classes around here...
the link is to a catalogue from the bead shop in london - it should show what you want and tell you what it's called, then you'll know what to type into ebay!
otherwise you could try the bead shop at the top of affleck's palace in manchester - it's not huge but they are usually pretty helpful!:happyhear0 -
You would want:
*Jewelery thonging (either leather, or cheaper and veggie/earth friendly cotton cord)
*'Coil Crimps' - this sort of thing. You push them onto the end of the cord and squish part of the spiral to make them 'hang' onto it.
*Small clip as a fastener (these) - see also here for a good illustration of use.
*Small pliers - to squish aformentioned coils Don't buy them from a jewellery shop, you should be able to find a pack of mini pliers at pound shop etc.
*Whatever beads/pendants you want
Hope that helps
(i think the spirally bits in the picture you posted are just fancy beads - they're not necessarily doing anything )0 -
