Cheaper rail tickets by calling!

I have been kicking myself for the past few days because I missed a £15.50 ticket from Manchester to Edinburgh this Sunday by holding off. It went up to £42.50 for the train that I wanted on all of the websites. I tried them all but realised that they must be linked and have the same prices (trainline, gner, and scotrail). So I called GNER on the off chance and they could still get me the £15.50 ticket. Very strange. I had to call Virgin first to ask about another service so did and also enquired about the Manchester to Edinburgh ticket at the same time and got told £42.50. So I called GNER back and booked it.

Why is this possible? Nonetheless, they may be some money to be saved by calling them in the future if you can't find a ticket cheap enough.

GNER probably still had an 'allocation' at that price and Virgin didn't.

The GNER website was quoting £42.50. That's why I found it strange. Why would calling them be cheaper than using their own website.

Yep, the advice from Martin has been going round my friends. I've been buying singles for years. That's the main advice he has.
