Confused & need advice re:Flights to USA

Im hoping someone will be able to extole some pearls of wisdom on me as I am getting to my wits end with trawling websites.
I am lucky enough to be going to NYC in October with work, this trip will happen just before October half term, my husband is a teacher and wants to fly out to meet me.
Work have said I need to make my own arrangements to get home if I want to stay on which is fine.

The problem I am having, which I knew would be the case is that a one way ticket from US to London is £££££ in comparision to a return ticket. I am fine to buy my husband a return ticket but am I right in the assumption that if I buy myself a return and dont travel on the outward ticket the return portion would be cancelled?

If this is correct and I am 99% sure it is, but I love to be told I am wrong, what websites\airlines do peeps suggest. I have been looking at all the usuals Opodo and Netflight have been fab. But I wondered if there was an american site(s) that may prove to be less expensive for booking a one way ticket for me, than the uk sites - hope this makes sense.

Thanks
Jane

yes, if you do not take the outbound leg the return will be cancelled.

Has work bought your ticket yet? If not, could you not check what the price would be to return the date you want and pay the difference (if there is actually any difference, depending on what dates you are going for work there may be no price difference).

If they have already bought the ticket, then you could try contacting the airline to see if they would allow a change of the return date for a fee rather than trying to book a separate return for yourself...it may be a long-shot but it's worth asking.

Or you could look at buying a return from NYC to the UK and only use the outbound leg I suppose.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Thanks to both of you. I have been at it (searching) for hours it seems. I have found some very very cheap flights with iceland express, now I have been reading up on them, they have had mixed reviews. I am not precious about what sort of flight we have just want to get from A to B, we flew all over asia with air asia last year starting with Stansted to KL, so we are fairly ok with low cost carriers.
I can get a return flight for hubby from Gatwick to Newark (via Iceland) for £291, and a one way on the same flight as him on the return leg for £143, I know there is probably ££ to add on top in fees, seat bookings etc etc, but to me that seems good, almost too good???

Part of me says bite the bullet and book em, but something is stopping me.

I wouldn't bother with them the reviews are really bad.
