Bt told me I'm not on a contract, confused

I emailed BT yesterday to ask what date my phone contract/calling plan ends and they responded with:
"I have investigated your account and confirm that you have Unlimited Weekend Plan (basic line rental option) for £11.54 including vat per month with Direct Debit and paper free discount. I confirm that the above plan is not in a contract."
According to them I should be able to cancel my BT line without incurring fees, but the BT help pages say otherwise:
"When you order services from BT there will be normally be a minimum contract period of 12, 18 or 24 months. If you decide to stop receiving a service within this minimum period you'll have to pay an early termination charge."
Even the page with the Home phone calling plans says its a 12 month contract. I'm confused on whether I am on a contract or not. Are there separate contracts for the line rental and the calling plan? Did they use clever wording to skirt around that information?
Can someone help me make sense of this
Many thanks

Hi KazCos,
I'm sorry to read of the confusion which has arisen here regarding the contract for your services. When the line is installed, there would be a minimum contract term for 12 months.
We do provide rolling contracts (which usually entail a special offer) which are automatically renewed for a further 12/18 months unless you opt out of the renewal. On rolling contracts, we send a letter to our customers 30 days before the contract is due to expire advising that the special offer would be automatically renewed; giving customers the chance to opt out if they wish to do so.
If you'd like you can email me to the address in our public profile with your account information and I'll clear things up for you. Can you also please include a link to this thread so that I can refer back to it?
Many thanks,

I think what they told you was that you are now out of your minimum term contract. So you just need to give the standard 30 days notice. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
