Credit Card Virgin- Help

in Credit cards
Hi all,
I am about to book a holiday and I want to book it on credit card so that I can get my money back if anything goes wrong.
However, I have never had a credit card and have got an appointment at the bank tomorrow to apply for one.
I am going to ask some seriously dumb questions here, and I'm asking you to please be patient with me as this is an area I have never looked at before!! Here goes;
1. What are the criteria for being accepted for a credit card? I know each provider has different criteria but can you just give me some broad ideas...
2. Are you always charged interest on your credit card (unless its a 0% card of course?). So if I use £1,000 on my credit card, will my bill at the end of the month by £1,020 if my credit card has a 2% interest rate?
3. I was under the impression that if I spent £1,000 on my credit card, I would receive a bill for £1,000 that month. Then if I paid it off in full I wouldn't be charged interest. I was under the impression that interest is only charged if you use the credit card for ATM withdrawals and if you don't pay off the full amount in a given month. Is this right or am I barking up completely the wrong tree?
Again, sorry if these are really stupid questions. I have never had a credit card before, neither has my mum or my partner's parents and these people are my sources of worldly information!!
Thanks ever so much.

if you book through a abta regesterd company you will get your money back anyway
but would recommend you take a card abroad aswell
so long as you pay off what you spend on the date requsted you wont get charged at all
withdrawing from a ATM must be an absolute last resort (massive apr plus wthdrawal fees)0 -

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply.
I am planning to book through Thomas Cook, who are ABTA registered. I don't fully understand what ABTA do! So if my flights got cancelled because of, for example, a volcano or if Thomas Cook went under before I went away, would I get my money back even if I only paid on debit card?
I only really want the credit card to book a holiday- I wouldn't use the card on holiday and I certainly wouldn't use it at an ATM.
I'd use my credit card like once a year to book holidays!!
Do you know what the criteria for being accepted for a credit card are? I'm just a bit concerned that they might just say 'no, you can't have one'!'I can't deny the British influence on my accent and mannerisms, but I don't know the British national anthem, I didn't weep for Princess Diana and I always cheer when Britain loses at sport. xyellow is spot on. If you book through and ABTA agent you get your money back. However if you book with a credit card (or pay at least £100 of the total cost by cc) then you'll get your money back quicker should the worst happen.0
