York in December

My sister and I have decided to take my mum to York for the weekend for her birthday in December ( we are in our 30s, mum in 60s)
So any suggestions on where to stay? Want a nice hotel ( not a travel lodge) near the city centre , possibly with a pool but not essential, for weekend of 8th December.Price needs to be fairly reasonable, but not budget.
Would also like any ideas of nice places to eat, Mum likes english/ french food, not Italian or Indian.
Also any good suggestions of where to visit, we haven't been there for years.
Thanks....

Can't help with the accomodation i'm afraid - but whilst you are there take a trip to the McArthur Glen outlet - direct bus service there from the city centre.0

Take a look at this site http://www.visityork.org/accommodation/ for ideas of hotels but call them direct, you might get a better deal.
I agree McArthur Glen is worth a visit!!!0 -
I visited York with my family August bank holiday and we had a great time.We tried a place called Russells which does a lovely carvery meal, lots of choices of vegetables which you just help yourself to.They had a different menu also.A big hit with all the members in our group.0

York has loads of good restaurants though they are not cheap. Meltons is among the best (http://www.meltonsrestaurant.co.uk/) - pricey though! It has a cheaper sister Meltons Too. A wander down Walmgate (which Meltons Too is on) will give you 5 or 6 non-chain options. There are some other suggestions at: http://www.thisisyork.co.uk/tourism/wheretoeat/restaurantreviews/ .0
