in Credit cards
Hi all,
Ok i'm sure the majority of people here have all been silly and ignored debt, well thats me!
Me and my girlfriend moved into a rented house in November and one of the things we wanted was a sofa, i'm sure you're all well aware of DFS, if not you must have never watched adverts before! Well we got our sofa, then my son was born on Dec 26th.
We both found it hard settling in moving out from parents, paying bills, rent and looking after a child. Safe to say the sofa was forgotton about and we struggled. I've recently done a budget using the Martin Lewis one which i found great.
Now i have 2 issues, i have £980 to pay off the sofa by October, if not DFS take 6 monthly payments of the outstanding balance. I can't afford this and was wanting to pay over 12 month, this is where the credit card comes in. Also because the house i'm living in is relitively new built on a plot theres been some issues with setting up water bills and i have around 300 in water bills to pay, possibly more (i've never paid a bill and had the meter read) so i would also need to pay that. Would that be classed as a purchase?
I'd appreciate any help, i know i've been daft but now i'm getting my head sorted with parenting and money i'd like to get it all paid off and forget about it!

2 issues here I think?
1 You want a credit card to pay off DFS?
If you apply with a poor credit score you may get declined - get copies of your credit files (£2 each) and see what is on there.
2 If you are successful in getting a card it is possible to pay your water rates by credit card (well Welsh water certainly do).0 -
Experian is the main one - Welsh water certainly is classed as a purchase.
You need to clarify with whoever supplies the finance for DFS as to whether they will accept a credit card payment.0 -
ok thanks very much, much appreciated.0

Hello and welcome. Good timing, as we have time to work with. You can get a copy of your credit report from a number of companies, Equifax and experian are the biggest.
Pop alng to their websites. A statutory report costs £2. Both will offer a free trial of their credit service, but you only need a statutory report.
Once you receive it in the post in a week or so, go through it. Check if there are any issues. If unsure come back to here and someone will try to help and not pass judgement.
What water company? Someone might know if they accept a credit card. That said, most will offer monthly instalments if you can pay via direct debit.0 -
i`m abit bemused in so far as DFS usual offer is for 4 years FREE credit with no repayments for the first year then the purchase amount divided by 36 monthly payments???0

woodbine - i agree but as my original plan was to pay for the sofa straight off the salesman obviously set it up to the minimum amount of finance if you look on the website theres lots of different finance levels available, im in the process of seeing if i can change to spread my cost.0
