Cheapest flight from Sydney to South America

Me and my friend are looking to fly to South America (one-way) around the 17th of December 2010. We were looking to fly to Argentina but the price was about $2000. Someone said why don't you fly to Chile as it's closer but the cheapest flight I could find was even more expensive.
Does anybody know the cheapest way of doing this or the best search engine to find the cheapest flight to ANY country in South America?
Thanks

Tried Expedia.com? Aerolineas Argentinas fly from Sydney to Santiago in Chile, and presumably to other Argentinian cities as well - guess your problem is that one way flights are often more expensive than return.0

Thanks guys. Can't seem to find anything cheaper but we need to fly to the UK out of South America about 3 months later. Is there someway of joining these tickets up and making it cheaper. We will probably be flying Sydney ---> Argentina then 3 months later, Mexico ---> London?0

There is a round the world ticket on BA / QF that would allow you to do that (Qantas first flight, BA Second) - think it's called World Discovery.
Trouble is, I think it's a round trip only (not one way) and don't know whether you can get in Oz. You'd have to check an agent there.
Are you in Oz, or do you have a UK - OZ ticket already?0 -
There are few flights across the Southern Pacific, it's probably cheaper to fly to the US then to South America0

I am in Oz already, I think I may look for flights to the US and then to South America, didn't think of that..
Cheers!0
