Failed Credit Card application but good credit record

I've been trying to sort out a credit card to use abroad to save on charges etc... My problem is they won't give me one.

Firstly Santander would not swap my Paypal Card (run by Santander) to their Zero. I had to make a full application which got declined.

I've since tried for the new Halifax Clarity and that too has been declined.

Looking at Experian after signing up for my trial I can't see anything there that is anything other than green and zeros for months taken to pay. Everything is paid by direct debit on time and my only credit card is cleared in full every month.

Could 3 years of paying everything off on time with no carry over mean I get no card cause they make no money from me in interest charges? What could I do to make them change their minds?

Have you appealed any of the declines?

As cynical as most people are, that's more one of the wilder conspiracy theories more than anything to worry about - i've never seen any truth to it anyway.

Everyone seems to base it on actual credit worthyness but it could be a lot simpler - you already have a card right? If your overall available credit is fairly close to your monthly income you could well be rejected just because they deem that you have enough credit, might be better to close that account off before you apply for more. :)
