NYC flights from Manchester

Hi All, I am new to the forum so go easy on me!
I am looking to book return flights from Manchester to NYC for two adults and 2 kids (kids aged 5 and 3).
I would like to go for 7 or 10 days in the last 2 weeks of August, but even after using the usual MSE tools the prices are £700+ each which is too much for me.
We could in theory go last week of Oct 2010 or even third week of Feb 2011 (school holidays).
Any pearls of wisdom or tips?? Thanks in advance, BB

A quick search on kayak.com gives £536 22-30th August, flying with Air France via Paris. Late February in New York is likely to be very cold!0

I'm afraid you need to book really early to get really cheap flights.
Have you thought about flying down to LHR from Manchester and picking up a flight from there. It may work out cheaper that way. If you use advanced search on Kayak, you can enter via LHR somewhere.0 -
Kayak and Skyscanner can help. Continental is one airline with direct flights to Newark from a number of regional airports, but in many cases you will pay a premium to fly direct from the regions. You are likely to find the best deal is, as suggested, via a European hub: KLM through Amsterdam, Air France through Paris or even Lufthansa through Frankfurt.
BA and Virgin both have sales on at the moment: I think they were trailed in this week's MSE email.0
