Concerned aboutn self scanning tills in store full of elderly customers

Until the supermarkets pay me the same rate as a checkout operator, I utterly refuse to use the self-scanning tills. I'm not going to do the work of one of their employees for free. It's the staff being forced to guide customers onto these abominations that really gets to me. it's like turkeys being forced to vote for Christmas.0

I dont mind the ones in tesco but when i use the ones in asda i nearly always seem to end up having an argument with the blimmin' thing!
The tesco one is exclusively self serve other than customer service. I have seen loads of elderly people using them.
Now if they were designed to be menu type ones- i would do my nut- press 1 if you are using your own bag; press 2 if you are paying with cash; 3 if with card; press 4 blah blah blah...anyway I digress-at the end of the day, if the customers dont like it, they wont use it. The company will not listen to staff as they are not giving the company any money. The customers are and they are the ones that will (hopefullY!) get listened toI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Health & Beauty, Greenfingered Moneysaving and How Much Have You Saved boards. On my first encounter with them, I was forced to use one at my local Tesco because they were the only checkouts operating at 7.00am when I went in early one day.
My local Tesco did that too. They don't anymore. I simply refused to use them, and their employee had to put the shopping through a self-service. I will not do their job unless they pay me / give me a discount on my shopping.
My Tesco also refused to issue carrier bags a couple of years ago. That only lasted about 10 mins when people just dumped their shopping at the till and left. Tesco really need to change their attitude towards their customers.I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -
the majority of times that the self scan system doesn't work is down to the user rather than the machineThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

Yes but it's quite easy to upset the system. One wrong move and it's got you by the ropes.0 -
I'm sure someone at HQ has looked at the customer demographic for your store and many people in their 60s are capable of using computers.
Self-service checkouts will be useful for the people that want to one or two items but will abandon the purchase if the queues at the checkouts are too long (I've done this before even if I am hungry!) so some of your target transactions will be new sales from the customers that are in a hurry.
Personally I'd like to see "fast" self-service checkout lanes for people that know what they are doing and can scan/pack quickly and "slow" lanes for people who are learning or just have nothing better to do that hang out in their local supermarket all day!0 -
Unexpected item in bagging area! Yes my bl00dy handbag I hate them, sometimes staff try to make you go to them. I'd rather wait at the human till lol0

The obvious way to express your concerns is via the union, surely?Signature removed for peace of mind0

I'm not sure I understand what the concerns are really.
The store is introducing more choice, if an elderly person wants to use a manned till they can, if they want to self-scan now they'll be able to.
I personally love self-scanning, although if I buy more than 10 items it takes three times as long as having a professional till person doing it!
I laugh when sometimes I see people queuing at the self-scan and no customers at the manned tills...
Obviously if they had taken out all the tills I'd be with you, but so would all the customers up in arms who'd be shopping somewhere else....0 -
To be honest theres not much you can do, the firm arent going to remove the tills just because of 1 persons opinion plus they have spent alot of money on them0
