in Credit cards
If I book a holliday using a credit card for the deposit only, and suffering the 3% charge which seems universal now, and pay the ballance in cash, do I have the same default cover as if I had paid the full amount with the card.

You would, providing the cost is over £100 (not the deposit) http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/section75-protect-your-purchases#deposit
and providing your holiday is not through a third party which exempts it from section 75 cover (such as expedia, some travel agents), and providing any distinct single items making up the holiday are more than £100 (all on that article above).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
