Cannot get hold of the people I owe money to....

First time poster so sorry if this is in the wrong place.

I cancelled a home insurance policy in March of this year. There was a small amount to pay on it (I cancelled just after it was renewed) and I thought I had paid that so all good there. A month later, my old housemate passes me on a letter from the company saying they haven't been able to renew my old policy because they couldn't take payment from my account. So I write them a letter asking them to confirm that it has been cancelled. A few days later, they leave a message on my answering machine saying it has been cancelled but the small amount that was supposed to be paid back in March is still outstanding. They give me a number to call back on but I can't get through to them on it - so I write them an email a week later explaining this. They drop me another message, asking me to call back on weekday working hours - I work in an open plan office so there's nowhere to have a conversation like this during the hours they've given - so I email them again to explain this and ask if there's a way to resolve this without having to call.

No reply from them. So 6 weeks pass - during which time I, admittedly, kind of let it slip my mind - and I receive a text message from CARS asking me to call them. I try calling them about 7pm and, unsuprisingly, there's no response. So I've emailed them - again explaining that I probably won't be able to talk during weekday working hours and, if possible, can this be done by post and email.

I just wanted to know if anybody else has been in this situation before. I feel a bit bad for knowingly letting the debt go outstanding but, on the other hand, I dont' feel like my request for an alternative to telephone contact was unreasonable (and, if it WAS unreasonable, I kind of feel like somebody should have explained that so that I could have arranged a way to make/take telephone calls during working hours). I don't want anything "bad" to happen as I do geniuenly want to pay the outstanding money and this has always been my intention since the start and, although I do understand that there must be certain protocall for these things, I do feel like I'm kind of sitting here with a cheque shouting out "Excuse me, but who can I give this to?" and being completely ignored!! Help and enlightenment much appreciated.

What company is this, insurance companies have addresses you can right to, customer services usually and they have to have a complaints address for their complaints procedures. So you could send a written letter to either of those. But its right for you to chase it up!

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Thanks - sorry if it wasn't clear in the first post but my first port of call was the write them a letter (regular customer services address) and then my two further commincations were by email (again to the regular customer services address). They've been met with them leaving messages on my answering machine despite me requesting in the emails for alternative contact arrangements.

Complaints might be a good idea though - admittedly, after they didn't reply to my last email to customer services, it slipped my mind so didn't think to complain about lack of contact but definitely feel like I should!!
