Would speech problem get in the way in New York?

I'm thinking of taking a trip to New York due to the £160 return offer and have spoken with my parents to see what they think of the idea.

I have a speech and language disorder and will be travelling on my own if I do go and the question I'm asking is, is it a good idea for me to go or would I run into problems because of the disorder?

Thanks for replying!

No but I've heard from my parents that New Yorkers do things really fast and sometimes it takes my time to say things. That's why I'm asking.

There might be a system in the US where a badge is worn or something to avoid problems, may be worth doing a search at https://www.google.com

I'm sure people will be understanding. But even if they're not and you do find it's a problem, surely you could just pretend that you've lost your voice, and write everything down. If your difficulties extend to writing as well, maybe that could be a problem, but you could always anticipate what you might have to say in a given situation, e.g. buying tickets, booking into hotels etc. and have notes preprepared. I can't see that doing that would be too bad.

I say got for it.. nothing should stop you from doing what you want to do! I always say.. better to regret the things you did.. then the things you didn't do! ;)

Hi my son has a stammer same as you and i'm sure like him when your nervous it gets worse! When my son is old enough I will be happy for him to do what you are thinking of as its a common problem and most people will understand and try and make you feel relaxed. Only the very stupid would have a problem with it and they don't matter.
If it starts just smile and shrug most people will get the message. New Yorkers may speak fast but it doesn't make them heartless.
Enjoy yourself! Its safer than London!
But if ever I stray from the path I follow
Take me down to the English Channel
Throw me in where the water is shallow And then drag me on back to shore!
'Cos love is free and life is cheap As long as I've got me a place to sleep
Clothes on my back and some food to eat I can't ask for anything more

I’ve got an American friend who has a bad stammer. He’s never described it as giving any greater difficulty than I would think it would be if he were living in the UK. I think you’d be at more of a disadvantage with a thick Scottish accent than a speech disorder. :)

  • Just a thought - do you know what you'll do when you go through immigration at the NY airport?

They interrogate everyone with a series of standard questions....."How long are you staying?". "Where are you going?", "What's the name of your hotel?" etc etc. Usually the immigration staff are very impatient (I'm sure they are told to be tough) and if you don't answer a question quickly and instinctively, then they assume that you're lying - and will proceed to ask you a lot more questions......or even pull you into an office on the side.

Maybe it's something you can look into before you travel.
  • My son is Autistic.
Whenever we go away we take with us credit card sized cards telling them about his disability and the address and telephone number of where we are staying on the back in case.
I know this is of no help as you will be going on your own.
