My husband and son are going to Lisbon to watch the footy and I wondered if anyone knew of a hotel near to Benfica Stadium. I've looked on the web and emailed lisbon tourist info but got no joy, any help would be really appreciated.

Hi,
Try https://www.laterooms.com - you will have to select portugal and lisbon but there is some showing on that - when were you thinking of going? Another website to try would be http://www.centralr.com/Lisbon_City_Hotels.html?ref=1Weight Loss - 102lb0 -
I'd recommend doing a search on venere.com - really helpful website with lots of good maps/reviews, and reasonable prices too (which you also don't have to pay in advance!)
Plus for 4% off, use code: BK5HX8W
Hope that helps0 -

Every year I meet up with my old Uni pals and we travel to a different European city to watch the football. Strangely enough - this year we went to Lisbon....
We went in April, towards the end of the season. Luckily enough, we were able to take in two games - Sporting Vs Porto (the title decider) on the Saturday, and Benfica Vs Maritimo on the Sunday.
Both stadiums are really close together - but out of the two games, Sporting was by far the best in terms of atmosphere and passion (possibly influenced by the game being the title decider!!).
Tickets are easy to get hold of... unless either Benfica, Sporting or Porto (the three main clubs) are playing each other - the games pretty much dont sell out. Even if they do - you can get tickets from touts who lurk outside the ground.
With regards to the city itself - I was pretty dissapointed to be honest- not a patch on the major Spanish/Italian cities, very little to do - although the locals are a lot more welcoming and friendly.
After two days of walking around - we were not able to establish an actual "city centre" if you like (pubs/clubs like here in the UK) - every thing is a lot more dispersed. Most of the activity is in the "Docas" (if i remember rightly!!) area - right on the banks of the Tigres (again - i may have confused the river!!). There are a number of bars/resteraunts - although nothing like what you would see at home.
The hotel I stayed in was call the Vila Gale Opera. It cost about £60 pp(based upon 3 sharing a room) - I booked through expedia. The hotel was fabulous in every way - I was really impressed - and is situated directly opposite the bars/resteraunts mentioned earlier, and under the city's main rail/road bridge (the walls are well insulated and you cant hear a thing at night though!!). You also get a great view of the Jesus Christ statue on the other side of the river (which mirrors the one in Rio de Janero).
The hotel was about 10 minutes by cab from the stadium. Alternativel you could catch a bus to the metro station (3 minute drive) - then two tubes to the stadium.... local transportation is much more fun!!!
Benfica's stadium is brilliant - Arsenal's new stadium looks the spit of it. Keep your eye out for the eagle that flies around before kick off!! There is also a massive shopping mall opposite it (for any holiday pressies!!!).
If you have any q's at allwith regards to anything Lisbon related - let me know and i'll try my best to answer!!!0 -
We have been to Lisbon several times, and been to football each time too.
We always stay at the Residencial Lar Do Areeiro which is in a very convenient location for everything. The Metro station is in the square by the hotel, and goes to the centre one way and the stadium the other. The hotel is nothing fancy, but it is clean, comfortable and does a decent breakfast included in the price.
Lisbon is a beautiful city if you care to explore it, and Metros and trams are the best way. The people are wonderful, the food and drink good and prices cheap. Nightlife is mainly in the Bairro Alto area. Get a good guide book. We use the Lisbon Directions, published by Rough Guides, which is excellent.
If you are really into football you could probably fit in more than one game. There are games all over the weekend - get the daily sports paper, Bola, for details of times. We also went to Belenenses, which is a tramride to Belem, but they were relegated last season so it would only be second division football. Belem is on the river and worth a visit anyway.
I guarantee you will love the place, especially a visit to Benfica. The whole place is steeped in history.0 -
Many thanks for the replies, all really useful.0
